South African Mint

South African Mint – South African Mint of the Krugerrand Coins

South African Mint is one of the world's most important state mints and is closely tied to the history of modern investment gold. The mint is based in Centurion and is owned by the South African Reserve Bank.

Its products are known above all for the Krugerrand investment coin, which has shaped the physical investment gold market since 1967. For investors they mean a long history, high recognisability and very good tradeability.

History and Significance of the Krugerrand

A key milestone was the introduction of the Krugerrand gold coin in 1967. The coin was created in cooperation with Rand Refinery and first minted on 3 July 1967. Its motif features Paul Kruger and the springbok antelope. The Krugerrand is among the first modern investment gold coins and one of the symbols of physical gold investing.

Gold Krugerrand (Brand Characteristics)

The gold Krugerrand does not carry a face value in a currency, but it has the status of legal tender in South Africa; its value is tied to the gold it contains. It is made of gold with a fineness of 916.7/1000 Au, an alloy of gold and copper for greater durability. Note: the gold Krugerrand is not currently part of the GOLDU offer – the silver variant is available.

Silver Krugerrand at GOLDU

The silver Krugerrand keeps the iconic design of the gold coin and offers a more accessible way to hold physical precious metal. The GOLDU offer includes the silver Krugerrand 1 oz with a fineness of 999/1000 Ag, with no stated face value. For investment silver, note that VAT applies on purchase, unlike investment gold.
