Which Gold Bar Weight to Choose? Overview from 1 g to 1 oz
One of the first questions when buying investment gold is which weight to choose. GOLDU offers gold bars from 1 g up to a full troy ounce, from several Swiss, Austrian and British manufacturers. In this overview we go through the individual weights and show which specific products you can choose at GOLDU for each.
1 g – the entry weight for a first purchase
A one-gram bar is the most affordable entry into physical gold – ideal for a first purchase, regular smaller investments or as a gift. At GOLDU you can choose from several versions:
- 1g Argor-Heraeus gold bar – the Swiss refinery’s bestseller
- 1g PAMP Fortuna gold bar – with VERISCAN™ protection
- 1g Valcambi gold bar – another Swiss refinery with the LBMA Good Delivery standard
- 1g Argor-Heraeus Kinebar gold bar – with holographic Kinebar® protection
- 1g Argor-Heraeus Year of the Horse 2026 gold bar – limited edition
2 g and 2.5 g – a slightly bigger step
If 1 g feels too small and a 5g bar too big a step, 2 g and 2.5 g offer a comfortable middle ground:
5 g – the most popular compromise
The five-gram weight is among the most sought-after – it offers a better ratio of price to gold content than the smallest bars while remaining compact and easy to store. At GOLDU the 5 g weight has the widest choice of brands and editions:
- 5g Argor-Heraeus gold bar
- 5g PAMP Fortuna gold bar
- 5g Münze Österreich gold bar
- 5g Valcambi Green Gold gold bar – with independently verified origin
- 5g Britannia gold bar – with a The Royal Mint design
- 5g PAMP Rose gold bar
- 5g Argor-Heraeus Kinebar gold bar
- 5g Argor-Heraeus Year of the Horse 2026 gold bar
10 g and 20 g – for more advanced investors
Larger weights are no longer just an entry choice – they suit investors who want to put a larger amount into physical gold in a single piece while keeping a compact format:
- 10g Argor-Heraeus gold bar
- 10g PAMP Fortuna gold bar
- 10g Argor-Heraeus Year of the Horse 2026 gold bar
- 10g Britannia gold bar
- 20g Argor-Heraeus gold bar
- 20g PAMP Fortuna gold bar
1 oz – the classic troy ounce
The troy ounce (approx. 31.1 g) is the most widely used international unit of investment gold and can be traded easily anywhere in the world:
How to choose the right weight for you
As a rough guide: the smaller the weight, the higher the percentage premium per gram, but the easier it is to sell the gold in parts later or give it as a gift. Larger bars usually have a lower premium per gram, though the price per gram does not fall evenly with every weight – it pays to compare. If you are just starting out, a 1g or 5g bar is a natural start. If you already hold some gold and want to build your position more efficiently, 10 g, 20 g or 1 oz make more sense. If you prefer a minted coin with a face value instead of a bar, also take a look at investment gold coins.
