Valcambi Green Gold: Investment Gold with Verified Origin
With investment gold, the usual questions are fineness, weight and premium. Where the metal comes from is rarely asked – and yet it is the only property of a bar that you can never find out after you have bought it. The Green Gold line from the Swiss refinery Valcambi answers exactly that question: gold from Fairtrade-certified mines, with origin traceable from the mine to the customer. This article explains what lies behind it and who it makes sense for.
Gold is an anonymous metal – and that is a problem
Once remelted, every gram of gold is the same. Metal from a mine with good conditions and metal from illegal mining look completely identical after refining – no device can tell them apart. Origin cannot be read from the bar, only from the documentation that accompanies it all the way.
That is why responsible refining systems were created. The LBMA Responsible Sourcing standard obliges certified refineries to vet their suppliers and reject metal from problematic sources. Green Gold goes one step further.
What is Valcambi Green Gold
Green Gold is a separate product line introduced by Valcambi in 2008. It does not differ from standard production in the metal – the fineness is the same 999.9/1000 Au – but in what is known about the metal.
- Fairtrade certification – the line is reserved exclusively for gold from mines certified under this system.
- Traceable origin – the gold can be traced from the mine to the customer, not just to the supplier.
- Independent verification – the origin is confirmed not only by the manufacturer’s own declaration but by a third-party certification system.
- Standards at the mine – sources must meet strict requirements for health, safety at work and environmental protection.
The difference from a standard bar is therefore informational, not material. You are buying the same gold, but with a documented history.
What Fairtrade certification means for gold
Fairtrade is an international certification system that, for gold, focuses on small-scale and artisanal mining operations. A certified mine must meet requirements for safety at work, handling of chemicals, environmental protection and working conditions – including a ban on child labour. The system also includes a premium that flows back to the mining community and is invested in local development.
For investors, this means that with Green Gold the origin is not just the manufacturer’s claim but the result of independent checks at the mine. In 2008 Valcambi was the first refinery in the world to offer gold traceable in this way.
Why Valcambi does it at all
By volume processed, Valcambi is the largest refinery in the world, based in Balerna, Switzerland. Switzerland has no mining of its own – all the metal comes from elsewhere, which makes its refineries a key checkpoint in the whole supply chain. Whoever vets suppliers here influences a substantial part of the world market. The history of the refinery and its innovations is summarised in the article Valcambi: the story of the world’s largest refinery.
Green Gold in practice: the 5g bar
GOLDU offers the 5g Valcambi Green Gold bar. In practice, five grams is a sensible compromise: compared with building the same value from one-gram pieces it usually carries a lower premium per gram, while remaining small enough to be sold in parts in the future.
| Parameter | Value |
|---|---|
| Weight | 5 g |
| Fineness | 999.9/1000 Au |
| Refinery | Valcambi, Switzerland |
| Standard | LBMA Good Delivery |
| Packaging | sealed blister with certificate |
| Special feature | independently verified, traceable origin |
How the premium relates to weight is explained in the article Premium on gold; a comparison of all available weights is in the overview Which gold bar weight to choose.
Does origin affect the value when you sell?
Let’s be honest: the buyback price depends on weight and fineness, not on how ethically the gold was mined. A Green Gold bar sells for the same price as any other Valcambi bar of the same weight. Anyone expecting a premium for origin will be disappointed.
What does hold true is that it is a standard product from a renowned LBMA refinery in an intact blister, and therefore a highly liquid piece. Green Gold takes nothing away – it adds information you do not have with a standard bar. What the LBMA standard means in general is discussed in the article What is the LBMA and Good Delivery certification.
Who it makes sense for
Green Gold is a choice for investors for whom it is not enough that the metal is genuine and who also care about what lies behind it. The practical reason is usually one of three:
- Personal conviction – I do not want my savings to finance problematic mining.
- A gift with a story – for gold for children or for an anniversary, documented origin is a welcome added value.
- Corporate purchases – organisations with their own responsible purchasing rules need to document origin.
If, on the other hand, your only goal is to accumulate as much metal as possible for as little money as possible, the difference between Green Gold and a standard bar will not matter much to you. Both are fully fledged investment gold.
The journey from mine to bar
For traceability to work, records must be kept at every step – from mining through transport and refining to the minting of the specific piece. That is why origin cannot be “added” afterwards: either it is tracked from the start, or never. What the whole journey of gold looks like is described in the article The journey of gold from mine to bar.
Summary
Valcambi Green Gold is standard 999.9 investment gold from the world’s largest refinery – with one extra difference: it comes from Fairtrade-certified mines and its origin is traceable. Origin does not affect the buyback price or increase liquidity, so it is not an investment advantage. It is a choice based on values, not finances. If it matters to you, it is the only product in our range that makes it possible; if not, a standard Valcambi bar will serve exactly the same purpose. Our full range is in the investment gold category, and an overview of brands in the article Investment gold manufacturers.
Frequently asked questions
Is Green Gold different gold from a standard bar?
The metal is the same – 999.9/1000 Au. The difference is that with the Green Gold line the origin of the gold is independently verified and traceable back to the source.
What is certified in Green Gold?
The line is reserved for gold from Fairtrade-certified mines. The system sets requirements for safety at work, handling of chemicals, environmental protection and working conditions, and includes a premium for the mining community.
Is Green Gold more expensive?
As with other bars, the price depends on the current metal price and the production premium. The current price of each weight is shown on the product page.
Will I get more for Green Gold in a buyback?
No. The buyback price is set according to the weight, fineness and condition of the product, not the origin of the metal. Green Gold is, however, a standard LBMA refinery product and therefore has the usual high liquidity.
How can I tell Green Gold from a standard Valcambi bar?
By the name of the line on the packaging and certificate. The metal itself is no different from standard Valcambi production.
In what weight is Green Gold available at GOLDU?
We currently offer the 5g Valcambi Green Gold bar. The availability of other weights may change depending on the refinery’s range.
