The Most Expensive Coins in the World: Stories Worth Millions

Some coins have sold for more than a luxury villa or a collection of cars. What is behind their astronomical prices? Usually a combination of rarity, history and a gripping story. Join us on a tour of the most expensive coins in the world.

1. 1933 Double Eagle – the most expensive coin of all time

The American gold 20-dollar piece of 1933 sold at auction in 2021 for around 18.9 million dollars. What makes it dramatic is that most of the mintage was melted down and owning one was illegal for a long time – linked to the 1933 gold confiscation. A handful escaped and became legends.

2. 1794 Flowing Hair Dollar – the first American dollar

The 1794 silver dollar is considered one of the very first dollars struck by the United States. One example changed hands for around 10 million dollars, making it one of the most valuable silver coins in history.

3. 1787 Brasher Doubloon – hand-struck gold

This early American gold coin was made by the goldsmith Ephraim Brasher before an official mint even existed. Thanks to its rarity and age, it sold for around 9 million dollars.

4. Edward III Florin of 1343 – the “Double Leopard”

Only three examples of this 14th-century English gold coin are known. It is one of the rarest and most valuable British coins of all.

5. Big Maple Leaf – the 100-kilo coin that was stolen

The Canadian mint produced a giant coin weighing 100 kg with a fineness of 999.99 and a face value of one million Canadian dollars (the value of the gold is many times higher). One example was stolen from a Berlin museum in 2017 – and, according to investigators, most likely cut up and melted down.

What makes a coin so expensive?

For record-breaking coins, what matters is not only the gold or silver they contain but above all:

  • rarity – how many pieces have survived,
  • history and background – who struck the coin and when,
  • condition and preservation,
  • collector demand at auctions.

This is therefore collector value, which differs from an ordinary investment in metal weight. The difference is explained in the article Numismatic vs. bullion coins.
