Gold Rushes: The Greatest Hunts for Gold in History
A single gold nugget was enough to set the crowds in motion. Gold rushes are among the most dramatic chapters in history – they drew millions of prospectors, founded cities and changed entire nations. Let’s look at the most famous of them.
California 1848: the birth of the “forty-niners”
When gold was found at Sutter’s Mill in 1848, the best-known gold rush in history began. Within a few years hundreds of thousands of prospectors poured into California – the so-called “forty-niners” (after the year 1849). The sleepy settlement of San Francisco became a boom town, and California began its meteoric rise.
Australia 1851: Ballarat and Eureka
Just a few years later, gold fever gripped Australia too, above all the colony of Victoria and the Ballarat goldfield. The influx of prospectors from around the world multiplied the colony’s population within a decade. The rush is also linked to the Eureka Stockade rebellion, which shaped Australian democracy.
Witwatersrand 1886: the world’s largest deposit
The discovery of gold on the Witwatersrand plateau in South Africa led to the founding of Johannesburg and made the country the world’s largest gold producer for many decades. It was one of the richest gold deposits ever discovered.
Klondike 1896: gold near the Arctic Circle
The last great gold rush of the 19th century took place in the far north – in Canada’s Yukon, on the Klondike River. Prospectors endured a gruelling journey over snowbound passes to reach Dawson City. Tales of the Klondike also inspired the writer Jack London.
What the gold rushes had in common
- they were usually triggered by a single find that spread like wildfire,
- they drew huge waves of migrants from all over the world,
- they founded new cities and built infrastructure,
- most prospectors got little richer – merchants and suppliers often earned more,
- they permanently changed the economy and the map of the regions.
