The Biggest Gold Heists in History

Gold has always attracted not only investors but also thieves. Its value, how easily it can be turned into cash and how hard it is to trace make it the dream target of the most daring robberies. Here are five stories that went down in history.

1. Brink’s-Mat 1983 – the heist with a “curse”

At London’s Heathrow airport, robbers seized a warehouse holding around three tonnes of gold worth about £26 million. They had planned to steal cash – instead they found mountains of gold bars. Much of the metal was never recovered, and the case gave rise to the legend of the “Brink’s-Mat curse”.

2. The Great Gold Robbery of 1855 – a raid on a train

One of the first great train robberies in history. Boxes of gold were travelling by train from London to Paris, but the thieves had made copies of the safe keys, swapped the gold for lead along the way and vanished. The daring plan worked almost perfectly.

3. Hatton Garden 2015 – the “pensioners” in the jewellery quarter

Over an Easter weekend, a gang of experienced, mostly older men drilled their way into a safe deposit vault in London’s jewellery quarter. They made off with gold, jewellery and cash worth millions of pounds. The case inspired books and films.

4. Toronto 2023 – gold vanishes from the airport

A container holding around 400 kilograms of gold and foreign currency worth more than 20 million Canadian dollars disappeared from a cargo terminal at Toronto airport. The perpetrators used a forged waybill and simply “collected” the shipment. It is one of the largest heists in Canadian history.

5. Big Maple Leaf 2017 – the theft of the 100-kilo coin

The giant Canadian coin weighing 100 kg disappeared from a Berlin museum. The thieves carried it out through a window at night using a ladder and, according to investigators, most likely cut it up and melted it down – so that the untraceable gold could be turned into cash more easily. More about the coin is in the article The most expensive coins in the world.

Why security is essential with gold

These stories are a reminder of why security matters so much with precious metals – from storage to transport. That is why at GOLDU sales, packing and buybacks take place under video surveillance, and we ship parcels safely and insured. How to protect gold at home and elsewhere is summarised in the article How to store investment gold.
