Risks of Gold Savings Plans: Why Keep Gold at Home

With savings and custody programmes for investment gold, it pays to look closely at what can go wrong in practice – and why physical ownership at home does not just reduce many of these risks but removes them altogether.

Allocated vs. unallocated gold – the difference that decides everything

The key question for any savings or custody programme is: is the gold allocated or unallocated? With allocated gold you own specific, identifiable pieces (bars with serial numbers) that legally belong to you, even if the provider goes bankrupt. With unallocated gold you only have a claim against the provider – a promise to deliver a certain amount of metal from its common pool on request. In the second case you do not own gold but a claim to gold – and that is a fundamental difference.

Counterparty risk: what happens if the provider goes bust

If the provider of an unallocated programme becomes insolvent, holders of unallocated gold usually become ordinary unsecured creditors in the insolvency proceedings – standing in line with banks, suppliers and other creditors, not as owners of specific assets. Their claim may then be met only in part or not at all, and the proceedings can take years.

Even large institutions are not immune

Even renowned, long-established providers of precious metals custody programmes have in the past come under the scrutiny of regulators, for example over how transparently they inform clients about the handling of unallocated metal. Such cases show that the reality of unallocated “ownership” can differ from what clients expect.

Hidden fees that eat into value year after year

Even legitimate custody and savings programmes usually charge ongoing fees for management and storage. Unallocated products tend to be cheaper and more liquid – precisely because they carry higher counterparty risk. Allocated products are safer, but the fees for permanent storage add up over time and reduce the effective return – compared with the one-off cost of physical gold you take home.

Withdrawal limits just when you need them most

Contracts for savings and custody programmes often include notice periods, minimum withdrawal amounts or conditions under which the provider can suspend delivery. In calm times this does not matter. The problem arises precisely in periods of market stress or crisis – exactly when physical access to your gold matters most, while the provider may face a rush of withdrawal requests from all clients at once.

Why gold at home removes these risks

Physical gold you keep at home (or in your own bank safe deposit box) does not just reduce these risks – it removes them. It does not depend on the solvency of any third party, is not subject to anyone else’s insolvency proceedings, has no notice period or delivery conditions, and nobody can lend or encumber it without your knowledge. The question “What happens if the provider goes bust?” simply does not arise – because there is no provider in the chain.

Frequently asked questions

Does this mean all third-party custody is dangerous?

Not necessarily – allocated custody with a reputable, transparent provider carries considerably less risk than unallocated programmes. The key is always to check whether the gold really is allocated and how your ownership rights are set out in the contract.

How can I tell whether a programme is unallocated?

Ask directly: will you receive a specific bar with a serial number registered in your name, or just a share of a common pool? If the contract talks about a “claim” or “share” rather than a specific piece allocated to you, it is very likely an unallocated product.

Does keeping gold at home have any downsides?

Yes, you take on full responsibility for security and insurance. It is a trade-off: in exchange for eliminating counterparty risk, you have to handle physical security yourself – more in the article How to store investment gold.
