How Much Gold Does an Average Czech Wage Buy?

The gold price is tracked in dollars per ounce, but Czech investors pay and earn in Czech crowns. A more interesting question than a price chart is therefore this: how many grams of gold can you buy with one month’s work? The answer is uncomfortably clear. In 2000 it was 38 grams; today it is 17.5. We looked at the official data on the gold price in crowns, added wage statistics and calculated how the purchasing power of the average Czech wage, expressed in investment gold, has changed over the past 26 years.

The gold price in crowns has risen eightfold since 2000, wages just under fourfold. With one average wage you buy 17.5 grams of gold today instead of 38 back then. Sources: LBMA, Czech National Bank (ČNB), Czech Statistical Office (ČSÚ).

One wage buys just under half of what it did in 2000

Take the average gross monthly wage in the Czech Republic and divide it by the price of a gram of gold in the same year. You get a simple number: how much metal a month’s work buys. It falls in every decade.

YearAverage gross wageGold price per gramGrams of gold per wage
200013,219 CZK346 CZK38.2 g
201023,864 CZK752 CZK31.7 g
202036,176 CZK1,320 CZK27.4 g
202651,966 CZK2,964 CZK17.5 g

Over those 26 years wages rose 3.9 times, but the gold price in crowns rose 8.6 times. The gap between these two numbers is the whole story: the purchasing power of a monthly wage expressed in gold has fallen by 54 percent. One month’s work now buys less metal than at any time this century.

How many crowns a troy ounce of gold costs

The same thing from the other side. A troy ounce weighs 31.1 grams and is the unit in which gold is traded on the world market – why this unit in particular is explained in the article on the history of the troy ounce. In 2000 an ounce cost just under one monthly wage. Today it costs almost two.

Why gold rose faster in crowns than wages

The crown price of gold is the product of two numbers: the world price in dollars and the koruna’s exchange rate against the dollar. Between 2000 and 2026 the dollar price of gold rose almost sixteenfold. Over the same period the koruna strengthened against the dollar from 38.59 to 20.81 crowns per dollar, which roughly halved the rise in crown terms. The result is an 8.6-fold increase – still more than double the growth in wages.

This exchange-rate effect works both ways and is very noticeable in practice: a stronger koruna makes gold cheaper for Czech buyers even when it is getting more expensive on world markets. We discuss this in detail in the article Strong Czech koruna and the price of gold, while the mechanism behind the world price itself is described in the article How the gold spot price is set.

2000 was an exceptionally low base

Being honest with the numbers also means saying this: 2000 was not a random year. Gold was then at the bottom of a twenty-year decline – from its 1980 peak the dollar price had fallen for two decades and in 2000 was at its lowest of the whole period. The comparison therefore starts from an exceptionally low base, and the rise looks steeper than the long-term average.

So gold does not always rise, and it is not an instrument with a guaranteed return. What does hold across periods is its role as a store of value against currency – as the comparison with inflation also shows: CZK 1,000 from 1993 now has the purchasing power of CZK 281. Why gold fulfils this role is summarised in the article Gold and inflation: protecting savings.

What this means for investors

The practical conclusion is not “buy everything now” but rather the opposite: the longer the first purchase is postponed, the more expensive each gram becomes. The figures above show that a delay of a decade has historically meant noticeably less metal for the same month’s work.

A proven answer to fluctuating prices is to top up regularly with smaller weights instead of a one-off purchase – the approach is described in the article Buying gold regularly. For such a reserve, the 1 g PAMP Fortuna bar or the 5 g Argor-Heraeus Kinebar are suitable. If you want to buy today’s “monthly wage in gold” in a single piece, the closest is the 20 g PAMP Fortuna bar; a full ounce from the table above is the 1 Oz PAMP Fortuna bar.

Note one thing the tables above do not capture: the prices shown are spot prices, i.e. the price of the metal alone. The actual purchase price also includes a production premium, which is much higher for small weights than for large ones – it is explained in the article Premium on gold. How to choose between weights is summarised in the overview from 1 g to 1 Oz. You will find the full range in the gold bars and gold coins categories.

How we calculated

A troy ounce weighs 31.1035 grams. We calculated the price of an ounce in crowns as the London gold price in dollars multiplied by the Czech National Bank exchange rate. The “grams per wage” column is the average gross monthly wage divided by the price of a gram.

For 2000, 2010 and 2020, annual averages of the gold price and exchange rate are used. For 2026, the gold spot price on 6 September 2026 (USD 4,429.05 per ounce), the ČNB rate on 4 September 2026 and the Q2 2026 wage according to the Czech Statistical Office (CZK 51,966). The wage is gross, i.e. before contributions and tax – after tax, even less metal results.

Sources: gold prices are annual averages of the London fix according to the LBMA, exchange rates come from the Czech National Bank’s foreign exchange rates and wages from the Czech Statistical Office’s open data (average gross monthly wage per full-time equivalent employee).

Frequently asked questions

How many grams of gold does an average wage buy today?

About 17.5 grams. According to the ČSÚ, the average gross monthly wage in Q2 2026 was CZK 51,966, and the spot price of a gram of gold on 6 September 2026 was CZK 2,964. In reality it will be somewhat less – tax and contributions are deducted from the gross wage, and a production premium is added to the metal price.

Why use the gross wage and not the net wage?

The gross wage is the only figure the ČSÚ publishes in a comparable time series since 2000. The net wage would depend on tax rules that have changed several times over that period, and comparisons between years would lose their meaning. The ratio between years remains meaningful, but the absolute amount of metal is in reality lower.

Does this mean gold will keep rising?

No. Historical data are no promise of future developments, and gold can fall for many years – between 1980 and 2000 it lost value in dollars. That is exactly why 2000 is an exceptionally low base in the table. The figures show the long-term relationship between currency and metal, not a price forecast.

Why does the gold price in crowns rise differently from the dollar price?

Because the exchange rate feeds into the crown price. When the koruna strengthens against the dollar, it dampens the price rise in crowns; when it weakens, it amplifies it. Between 2000 and 2026 the koruna roughly doubled in value, so only about half of gold’s dollar rise showed up in crowns.

Does the same calculation apply to silver?

The principle yes, the numbers no. Silver fluctuates much more than gold and, unlike investment gold, is not exempt from VAT in the EU – with investment silver VAT is added to the price, which further reduces the purchasing power of a wage expressed in grams.
