Gold Falls Below USD 4,300: Bonds Weigh, ETFs Hold a Record
On Wednesday gold gave up its overnight gains and slipped in London below USD 4,300 per troy ounce, its lowest level in a week. For investors it is a reminder that short-term swings are part of investment gold – follow the current price on the Gold price page.
Why gold weakened
The main pressure comes from bonds. Yields on long-term government bonds of the USA and other Western countries rose last week to their highest in more than ten years, and the real yield on ten-year US inflation-protected bonds (TIPS) is the highest since November 2008. Gold itself pays no interest, so higher real yields raise the “opportunity cost” of holding it. Oil pulled in the opposite direction, touching USD 100 a barrel again overnight – an inflation risk against which gold is often a sought-after refuge.
ETFs: a short-term outflow, a long-term record
The two largest gold ETFs have trimmed their holdings slightly since Friday, by around 0.1%. According to World Gold Council data, however, global gold ETFs held over 4,250 tonnes of metal last week, more than ever before. What this means for you
We discussed the fact that traditional models based on real interest rates have not explained the gold price in recent years in the article Why gold valuation models stopped working. Weekly declines are nothing unusual – we described a similar swing in Gold’s worst week of 2026. Anyone who buys regularly can use a short-term dip to average the price – for example with smaller bars such as 5 g Argor-Heraeus or 20 g Argor-Heraeus, or the 1 Oz Wiener Philharmoniker coin.
