How much gold can I buy with cash? AML limits in practice

Cash still has its place – but with precious metals two different rules apply to it, and they are often confused. One limits how much you may pay in cash, the other sets the transaction value at which we must identify you. This article gives you both figures, converts them into specific weights of investment gold and explains how a cash purchase at GOLDU works. The full rules are on the page AML Act and customer identification.

Two limits that get mixed up

The cash payment limit and the customer identification threshold are unrelated. They apply side by side and come from two different laws.

Rule Threshold What it means
Cash payment limit CZK 270,000 per day between the same parties Above this amount cash is not an option at all – payment must be made by bank transfer from an account held in your name.
Customer identification (AML) EUR 10,000, roughly CZK 243,000 From this transaction value we verify the customer’s identity and the source of funds, regardless of whether you pay in cash or by transfer.

Note the order: the identification threshold is lower than the cash ceiling. In the range of roughly CZK 243,000 to 270,000 you may still pay in cash, but the transaction already comes with identification. The CZK 270,000 limit follows from Czech Act No. 254/2004 Coll. on the restriction of cash payments, the EUR 10,000 threshold from AML Act No. 253/2008 Coll. The koruna equivalent is converted at the current exchange rate, so it is indicative only.

How much gold fits into CZK 270,000

The clearest way to picture it is in actual products. The table below is based on GOLDU e-shop prices as of 20 September 2026 – gold prices change continuously, so treat the figures as indicative and check the current state directly on the product page or at Gold and silver price.

Product Price per piece Pieces up to CZK 270,000 Total gold
5 g Argor-Heraeus EUR 636.08 17 pcs 85 g
10 g Argor-Heraeus EUR 1,255.00 8 pcs 80 g
20 g Argor-Heraeus EUR 2,500.20 4 pcs 80 g
1 Oz Wiener Philharmoniker EUR 3,948.79 2 pcs 62.2 g

Rounded: for cash you will get around 80 to 90 grams of gold, depending on the weight you choose. CZK 270,000 currently corresponds to about EUR 11,000. Smaller bars carry a higher premium per gram, so the same amount buys slightly less metal – the topic is covered in Premium on gold: why the price per gram differs. The comparison Gold bar or gold coin helps with the choice.

How a cash purchase works at GOLDU

You can pay by bank transfer, by depositing cash into our bank account, or in cash on personal collection. Paying cash on site is possible by prior arrangement and up to CZK 270,000 – we need to prepare the goods and staff, this is not an over-the-counter shop. The details are set out in the Delivery and payment terms.

Cashless payments are accepted only from an account held in the customer’s name; for a company, in the company’s name. We do not accept payments from third parties unless the payer’s relationship to the customer and the source of funds are evidenced. Any refund always goes back to the same account the payment came from. The whole process is described in How to start investing in gold.

I want to buy for more than CZK 270,000

No problem – it just cannot be in cash. Above the cash limit payment is made by transfer, and transactions over EUR 10,000 come with identification. Also count on the fact that linked transactions are added together: splitting one purchase into several smaller orders that clearly belong together does not get around the threshold – they are assessed as a single transaction.

For larger volumes, larger weights with a lower premium make sense, typically the 20g Argor-Heraeus gold bar or the 1 Oz Argor-Heraeus gold bar. The full range is in the categories Gold bars and Gold coins.

What identification means in practice

Identification is not an interrogation and does not take hours. We record the identification data, make a copy of the identity document – an ID card or passport – and verify the source of the funds used. We do not send the documents anywhere; the law only requires us to keep them securely for ten years.

Ordinary documents serve as proof of the source of funds: a bank statement, proof of income, a tax return, a contract on the sale of property or a vehicle, an inheritance ruling or a deed of gift. Identification is not limited to sales on site – it also applies to e-shop orders delivered by a carrier.

Cash and taxes: two different things

The method of payment has no effect on taxation. Investment gold is exempt from VAT, investment silver is subject to VAT – regardless of whether you pay in cash or by transfer. Whether income tax applies to a later sale depends on the rules of your country of residence – in the Czech Republic, a sale by a private individual is generally tax-exempt, with no holding period. The white metal range is in the category Investment silver.

Frequently asked questions

Can I pay for gold in cash at GOLDU?

Yes, on personal collection by prior arrangement, up to the statutory limit of CZK 270,000 per day between the same parties. Above that amount a cashless payment is required.

How many grams of gold is CZK 270,000?

At September 2026 prices, roughly 80 to 90 grams depending on the weight chosen – for example 4 pieces of the 20g bar or 8 pieces of the 10g bar. Current prices are shown on the individual products.

From what amount must I show an identity document?

From a transaction value of EUR 10,000, i.e. approximately CZK 243,000. The threshold applies to purchases, sales and buy-backs and does not depend on the payment method.

Does splitting the purchase into several smaller orders help?

No. Transactions that clearly belong together are added up for the threshold. Splitting a purchase therefore neither postpones nor avoids identification.

Can I pay from someone else’s account?

As a rule, no. We accept payments from an account held in the customer’s name. A payment from a third party is possible only exceptionally, where the payer’s relationship to the customer and the source of funds are evidenced.

Why do you have to verify the source of the money at all?

Precious metal dealers are obliged entities under the AML Act. The purpose is transparent transactions and customer protection – which is why we trade exclusively in verified goods from certified refineries.
