Gold Bars - VERISCAN ™

Investment gold bars are the most direct form of physical investment gold – no minting design, no face value, just the metal itself in verified form. At GOLDU you will find gold bars from 1g up to 250g, always with a fineness of 999.9/1000 Au and from refineries holding LBMA Good Delivery status – Argor-Heraeus, PAMP, Valcambi, Münze Österreich and The Royal Mint. Smaller weights are supplied sealed in the original protective blister with an assay certificate.

Why choose a gold bar?

A gold bar is the simplest way to hold physical gold – without the collector premium you usually pay on a coin for the striking and the design. For the same amount you therefore generally get more metal than in a coin.

The premium over the metal price is spread across the weight of the bar, which is why it is highest on small weights and falls as the weight rises. From the middle weights upward it levels off, so the largest bar is not automatically the best value – it pays to compare the price per gram directly on the individual products.

The protective blister with an assay certificate preserves the condition of the bar and confirms its basic data (manufacturer, weight, fineness), which makes later trading and any future sale easier.

Gold bars or gold coins?

An alternative to bars are investment gold coins, which combine the value of the metal with traditional minting, a design and legal tender status. Both forms share the same fineness and the same status as investment gold – they differ mainly in the manufacturing premium, in tradability and in what they suit best. A detailed comparison is in the article Gold bar or gold coin?.

The difference in price per gram comes from the manufacturing premium and is not the same across all weights. On small and mid weights a bar is clearly cheaper than a fractional coin of comparable weight, because striking a smaller coin costs almost as much as striking a larger one. On one ounce products the difference all but disappears and bar and coin end up close to level on price per gram. Compare the price per gram on the specific product rather than deciding by form. The mechanism is explained in Premium on gold: why the price per gram differs.

Whether gold coins are more liquid than bars has no single answer – it depends on the coin. Globally recognised coins such as the Wiener Philharmoniker, Britannia or Maple Leaf are internationally tradable and dealers recognise them on sight, which keeps their liquidity on a par with bars. The selling process is described in How to safely sell investment gold.

In an economic crisis investors usually reach for both forms – at lower weights the bar gives more grams of metal for the money, while the coin's worldwide recognition makes a quick sale abroad easier. For buying regularly in smaller amounts, small bars (1g, 2g, 5g) work well: they carry no coin premium and stack into a reserve most smoothly. Bear in mind, though, that the smaller the bar, the higher the premium per gram – the convenience of small steps has its price.

Investment gold as part of your portfolio

Physical investment gold has long been regarded as a store of value. It is not a third party's promise nor a purely electronic record – the investor holds specific physical metal. Gold bars and gold coins are usually combined in a portfolio: bars in the middle weights as the core of the reserve with the lowest premium, coins for diversification and easier international liquidity. The full range of investment gold is in the main category.

Why buy from GOLDU?

At GOLDU we offer exclusively new, uncirculated investment gold bars and coins. The products do not come from buy-backs and are intended for customers who want to buy physical precious metals with an emphasis on verified origin, transparent information and secure delivery.

Frequently asked questions

Which is better – a gold bar or a gold coin?

It depends on your goal. At lower weights the bar has the lower premium per gram and is the simpler choice for building a reserve, while the coin offers a design, legal tender status and easier international tradability. Many investors combine both.

What is the difference in price per gram between a bar and a coin?

It depends on the weight. On fractional coins (1/10, 1/4 and 1/2 ounce) the price per gram is noticeably higher than on a bar of similar weight, because the striking costs are spread over less metal. On one ounce products the difference all but evens out. In detail in Premium on gold: why the price per gram differs.

Are gold coins more liquid than bars?

For globally known coins (Wiener Philharmoniker, Britannia, Maple Leaf, Australian Kangaroo) liquidity is comparable to bars – dealers know them and recognise them instantly. For less familiar issues, selling a bar may be simpler.

Which gold to buy in an economic crisis – bars or coins?

Both forms work as a store of value. At lower weights the bar gives more grams of metal for the same amount, while the coin makes a quick sale abroad easier. In practice, a combination of the two proves itself in a crisis.

Are gold bars suitable for regular investing?

Yes, small weights allow you to buy in small amounts and build a reserve gradually. Keep in mind, though, that the premium per gram is highest on the smallest bars and falls as the weight rises – if you are not in a hurry, buying a mid weight now and then works out cheaper than a one gram bar every month.

How does a coin's year of issue affect its price?

On ordinary bullion coins the year of issue has only a small effect on the price – what matters is the weight and fineness of the metal. The exceptions are limited issues and numismatically interesting years, where a collector premium is added to the metal value.

Which certificates increase the value of a coin or bar when selling?

The original assay certificate (part of the blister on bars), verifiability with the manufacturer and security features such as Kinebar or Veriscan make authentication easier and therefore speed up a sale at the standard price. What to look for in the markings is explained in How to read fineness and markings on gold.

Which gold coins are the most liquid and popular?

Among the most sought after are the Wiener Philharmoniker, Maple Leaf, Britannia and Australian Kangaroo – globally recognised issues that dealers accept without difficulty and that you will also find in our range. The article How to choose an investment gold coin helps with the choice.

What is the difference between bullion and numismatic coins?

Bullion coins are valued by the weight and fineness of the metal, numismatic coins by rarity, condition and history. GOLDU offers exclusively new investment coins, not a numismatic range.

Is investment gold a suitable gift for a newborn?

Yes, small gold bars are among the popular gifts for a birth or christening – the low entry price also makes it easy to keep adding to it in later years.

Is an investment gold bar exempt from VAT?

Yes. Investment gold is exempt from VAT within the EU under the statutory conditions.
